Leave Me Behind hooked me on K.M.โs brand of dark military romance, but this duet? It absolutely wrecked me.
Yes, Cam is unhinged โ but thatโs not the whole story. Heโs a product of brutal conditioning and emotional deprivation. The โdark forcesโ didnโt just weaponize him; they hollowed him out and rebuilt him for violence. When youโre in his POV, itโs hard not to see him as a victim of his environment. Beneath the instability is someone who desperately wants recognition, affection, and something that feels real.
Emery comes from her own version of broken. Raised to be a weapon instead of a daughter, sheโs been denied the same basic emotional needs Cam craves. And she has a fatal flaw:
โMy fatal flaw is the desire to fix broken things that donโt want or care to be fixed.โ
(โSame girl, sameโ -Nat, circa 2007)
So of course she sees Cam and feels that pull.
Their connection is volatile, obsessive, and undeniable. This duet doesnโt shy away from how dark that bond is โ it leans into it. K.M. writes emotionally layered stories where love and violence coexist in uncomfortable ways, and this series is no exception.
And itโs not just Cam and Emery carrying the weight. Every side character adds dimension. By book two, the Fury squad introduces an unexpected thread of found family, and the epilogue gives us a glimpse into life beyond the chaos โ a soft landing after so much destruction.
This duet is brutal, consuming, and intense โ but if youโre already a fan of K.M.โs work, you know thatโs exactly the point.
