By far my favorite Little Mermaid retelling to date. This one is giving Little Mermaid meets Pirates of the Caribbean with a sprinkle of Princess Bride—and Kate wove in those storybook details without making them feel forced or overdone.

Everything from Dessa “losing” her voice, to Alix bringing her trinkets from the human world, to her slightly out-of-control hoarding problem felt like a love letter to the original tale—while still being completely Kate’s own.

And then there’s Kastian. Our boy reads like he has a dash of OCD, which makes his inability to control his feelings for Odessa feel like being strapped to the front of a runaway rollercoaster (no brakes, no mercy). Add in a soul bond, and his “mild obsession” goes nuclear.

And honestly? I love a man who goes a little unhinged for his MFC.

Now, on the spice front: we don’t kink shame in this house, but Dessa and Kas were getting very public and very sandy. Like, I couldn’t stop wondering—did no one else question the logistics of sand in… delicate places? 🫣

Plot-wise, I loved that Jett played a bigger role this time—it makes me think he’s being set up as the next MMC (maybe with Aurelia?). I wouldn’t hate a Jett/Connell pairing either 👀 Either way, I’m crossing my fingers for more Captain James Connell in future books.
