I’m giving this one three stars because, while I found it entertaining, there were a few things that held it back for me.
The book clocks in at 279 pages… but only 222 of those actually have text. The rest are blank or filled with images—which, honestly, made it feel like the author was padding the page count. It’s a super quick read (which is fine!) but the pacing felt like I was watching it all unfold at 1.75x speed.
I liked the characters, though a lot of them felt one-dimensional. You can tell they’re going to be important in future books, but in this one, they barely registered. Case in point: Ryker. He’s mentioned often enough that I assume he’ll matter later, but if you cut him out of this book entirely, the plot wouldn’t change.
Raveanna is a rage-fueled badass, which I’m always here for, but I wish there was more to her than the “give no fucks” attitude. There are hints that she’s capable of deeper emotion—compassion, love, connection—but it wasn’t really explored. Even a single genuine moment of connection with someone in the camp would’ve added some welcome layers.
As for the tension between Valkahr and Raveanna… I’m intrigued, but the whiplash was real. Their relationship didn’t feel like it developed naturally; it just kind of was. And that’s coming from someone who fully supports the insta-love agenda.
Plot-wise, I have some theories—some of which feel a little too obvious:
- Raveanna’s divine form is probably a phoenix/firebird
- Valkahr = Constantine
- Constantine = Heir
So yeah, I wasn’t disappointed exactly… but I was left wanting a little more. I’ll definitely be checking out book two—I’m curious to see where it all goes.
