This was the perfect conclusion to Vivette and Jaghar’s story. While we all wish book two had seamlessly flowed into their happily ever after, that—unfortunately—is not how trilogies work. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Vivette and Jaghar return to the Peaks, knowing their ultimate goal is to inform the king of their relationship and get married. What kills me is how obvious it is that her father would have been thrilled about them. But thanks to plots and betrayal, they lose him before he can learn the truth or officially name Vivi his heir—marriage or not.

I loved Jaghar’s point of view in this one; he just kept getting better with each book. Of course, because he’s him, there was plenty of self-blame over the king’s death and doubt about whether he’s worthy of Vivette. But—of course—Vivi sets him straight.

Watching both of them grieve the king was heartbreaking, especially since he was a father figure to them both.

And naturally, these two are dynamite together—solving a murder and securing a throne in three nights. Oh, and Rosin took a long trip down the abyss, and I’m not even a little bit upset about it.
(There might also be a pattern here regarding what happens when you make an enemy of the princess and the spy. 👀)
