This book was even better the second time around. Lorian and Prisca together are everything I could want in an enemies(ish)-to-lovers setup. Prisca is sass in human form, and Lorian is equal parts infuriating and absolutely perfect.

Stacia had me hooked from the very first chapter. The book starts with Prisca having what can arguably be considered the worst day in history. I mean…

  • Prisca has magic she’s not supposed to.
  • She helps her coworker, who then rats her out—rude—and has to run.
  • Her mom tells her she’s adopted and then pushes her over a cliff.
  • She’s rescued from drowning—yay—by Lorian and friends (technically Galon), but they just leave her there—boo—though hey, Galon did give her a cloak.
  • She stumbles across Lorian and friends, tries to steal from them, and immediately gets caught.
  • Lorian agrees to help her, but only if she learns to use their magic (which she’s not exactly thrilled about) and helps them in return.

Fortunately, things improve (mostly).

I love the relationships Pris builds with Lorian’s men—especially Rythos 🥹. And I can’t help but enjoy how her friendship with Rythos gets Lorian all worked up.

I also liked getting a glimpse of Lorian and his brother’s relationship through their correspondence.

Prisca making it to the city and casually outshining every other rebel by accomplishing in weeks what they couldn’t in years? #Queen. Her tenacity and take-no-shit attitude are everything. She does get some help from Lorian, who turns out to be undercover, looking for an item, so they decide to work together. Naturally, this means bickering, distrust, catching feelings, and ultimately, both succeeding in their missions.

And then, in true Stacia fashion—queen of cliffhangers—we’re left with a victorious Lorian, a successful but betrayed (and pissed) Prisca, and a lingering “wow, what a dick move” energy as we anxiously await what’s next.
