Making the second book in a series as good as the first isn’t something every author can pull off, but Lisette Marshall does it flawlessly in Leather, the second installment of The Princess and the Spy series.
I love these two together—they work so seamlessly that you can’t help but root for them.
Unfortunately for me, I completely forgot the chokehold this book had me in for the first three chapters. Me? Sitting there with a knot in my throat and silently crying through the first 30 pages? No, no, you must be thinking of some other overly emotional book dragon.
You know what I hate? The miscommunication trope. You know what Lisette somehow managed to pull off without it subtracting from the story at all? The communication trope.
Would everyone have been happier and significantly less angsty if they stopped assuming they knew each other’s feelings (looking at you, Jaghar) and just said what they were thinking, feeling, and wanting (side-eyeing you, Vivette)? Absolutely. But did it make for some excellent and heart wrenching tension? Also yes.
Random Thoughts:
✨ This might be the only book that has me crying within the first 30 pages.
✨ Her father clearly loves her and wants her happiness—I bet if she’d been honest, he would’ve called the whole thing off (but then we’d have no book, so I get it 😅).
✨ Donovan and Cillian are festering piles of trash and deserve no one but each other.
✨ What Donovan and Cillian thought they were getting: a meek, clueless princess they could exploit.
✨ What they actually got: a crime-solving royal who refuses to let anything slide.
✨ The horses being named Turd and Fart? Gets me every time.
I kind of want more of Ysabel. After this experience, I bet she’d be a force to be reckoned with. Consider this my formal request for a spinoff.
