Know what’s harder than reviewing a book that altered your brain chemistry? Finally sitting down to write the review after your second—or third—re-read 😭😫.
It’s a travesty that I haven’t reviewed this series yet, but 2025 is the year I fix that.
I adore everything about this story and the incredible world L.J. has created. The magic systems? Unique and fascinating. The story? Familiar enough to feel like home but with twists that keep it fresh. And the characters? They’ll either have you cheering or cursing them (I’m looking at you Calder).
Every time I dive into any book in this series, it sucks me in as much as it did the first time. I don’t know what L.J. puts in her books, but I swear I go into withdrawals whenever I have to set one down to do “adulting” things like work or pay bills.
Let’s talk characters: Elise is my absolute favorite. (Followed closely by Halvar because, honestly, how can anyone not love that man?) I’m a sucker for a take-no-B.S. main female character, especially one navigating a time when women were expected to stay silent, and yet she still does whatever the hell she wants.
I mean…

“𝙄 𝙖𝙨𝙨𝙪𝙧𝙚 𝙮𝙤𝙪, 𝙆𝙫𝙞𝙣𝙣𝙖, 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙞𝙣 𝙘𝙖𝙥𝙖𝙗𝙡𝙚 𝙝𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙨.”
“𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘰𝘯𝘭𝘺 𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘴 𝘐 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘳 𝘤𝘢𝘱𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘮𝘺 𝘰𝘸𝘯.”
“𝘼𝙧𝙚 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙩𝙧𝙪𝙡𝙮 𝙥𝙡𝙖𝙣𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙤 𝙪𝙨𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩?” 𝗜 𝗳𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗱 𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗴𝗮𝘇𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗼𝘄 𝗶𝗻 𝗺𝘆 𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗱.
“𝘐 𝘥𝘪𝘥 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘣𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘪𝘵 𝘢𝘴 𝘢𝘯 𝘢𝘤𝘤𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘰𝘳𝘺, 𝘏𝘢𝘭𝘷𝘢𝘳.”
“𝘼𝙡𝙬𝙖𝙮𝙨 𝙖 𝙨𝙪𝙧𝙥𝙧𝙞𝙨𝙚, 𝙆𝙫𝙞𝙣𝙣𝙖 𝙀𝙡𝙞𝙨𝙚. 𝘼 𝙜𝙖𝙢𝙗𝙡𝙚𝙧, 𝙖 𝙬𝙤𝙢𝙖𝙣 𝙤𝙛 𝙨𝙩𝙪𝙙𝙮, 𝙖 𝙨𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙙𝙨𝙬𝙤𝙢𝙖𝙣, 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙣𝙤𝙬 𝙖 𝙝𝙚𝙖𝙡𝙚𝙧. 𝙄𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙚 𝙖𝙣𝙮𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙙𝙤𝙣’𝙩 𝙙𝙤?”
“𝘠𝘦𝘴, 𝘭𝘰𝘴𝘦 𝘢𝘳𝘨𝘶𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘴”
Even the villains are fantastic. Because, seriously—f** every single other person in that castle who isn’t a serf*.
- The king? Arrogant waste of space.
- Her dad? I hope he chokes on his next cough.
- Runa? I would absolutely throw hands.
- Calder? Sniveling little weasel.
- Jarl? Festering pile of excrement.

On the brighter side, I love her friends—especially Mattis. Don’t ask me why; he just speaks to my soul.
Legion Grey is *Chef’s kiss*
His character arc is so well done that when he reveals his true identity during the siege, I felt a pang of betrayal—but let’s be real, it lasted all of half a second. I always root for the anti-heroes, and he had me back on his side in no time.
The concept of a curse of bloodlust is unlike anything I’ve seen before, and it adds such a unique layer to the story.
That said, I did want to punch Legion at the end when he chose revenge over Elise.
Men 🙄
As if our Kvinna would ever put up with that nonsense.
Excuse me while I binge the rest of this series over the next few weeks, but somehow take all of 2025 to write and post my reviews 😆.
