Jennifer Hartmann has a knack for keeping me in an emotional chokehold like no other. Lotus was my first dive into her books, and ever since then, I’ve willingly subjected myself to emotional damage by romance novel. This has been my second (or third?) time reading it, and my first experience with the audiobook.

For the uninitiated, JH specializes in angsty romance tales that tear your heart out, run it through the spin cycle, and then put it back, slightly askew. Despite this emotional rollercoaster, her stories are worth every penny you might spend on therapy afterward.

“𝑻𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒆 𝒊𝒔 𝒃𝒆𝒂𝒖𝒕𝒚 𝒕𝒐 𝒃𝒆 𝒇𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒅 𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒚𝒘𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒆, 𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒏 𝒊𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒔𝒄𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝒖𝒔”

I’m a sucker for Syd and Oliver’s story, and Jen did a fantastic job with Oliver’s journey into his new life. His development didn’t feel rushed, yet the pacing kept the story engaging.

And that plot twist? Totally blindsided me on the first read! Well done, Mrs. Hartmann.

I highly recommend Lotus as a perfect entry point into JH’s work. It’s beautifully written and strikes a perfect balance between heartbreak and hope.

I enjoyed listening to the audiobook, though the male narrator didn’t quite hit the mark for me. His delivery often felt dry and choppy. Despite this, I don’t think it’s a major deterrent if you’re considering giving it a listen.
