I must have done something right because the universe rewarded me by making me part of L.J. Andrews’ street team. I was awed, blown away, and possibly screeching like a banshee (sorry, neighbors… JK, you have elephants tap dancing up there, and I’m tired of waking up at 2 a.m.) at the chance to be an ARC reader for *The Mist Thief*. I had the release date marked on my calendar because I’m that obsessed with the world and characters L.J. has brought to life.
I know this is technically Jonas’s story, but I’m obsessed with Skadi and her journey from being cowed by her power to owning it like the BAMF she is. Jonas, of course, is Jonas and has my heart from now until the end of time (even if he committed a travesty graver than murder 👀😠). He is Kase’s son through and through, darkness up front but nothing but goodness and softness inside.
“You terrify me, but I doubt it is in the way you think.”
“Then explain.”
“Because this frenzy in your heart has made mine do the same.”
I was overjoyed by Malin and Daddy Kase’s appearances throughout the story, especially (mostly) Kase. Some of my favorite Kase moments:
- Put Eldirard in his place for being a misogynistic pig.
- Defended Skadi without knowing her, making her affinity POWERFUL and not evil.
- Read Jonas the Riot Act about being faithful.
- Schemed, forever and always.
- Let Skadi call him Daj 🥹.
- Most notably, along with the rest of the clan, let Skadi accept her affinity and embrace the darkness within her.
“They’re all quite afraid to die.” My father looked at Skadi, a cruel sort of sneer on his face. She did not hesitate. “Such a pity for them, Daj.”
In true Eriksson male fashion, Jonas made me swoon, giggle, and sweat throughout the book. Despite striving to be the most aggravating of this next generation of characters, his heart makes up for all of it. His treatment of Skadi and how he stood up for her, before and right after the vows—before they’d even developed a relationship—epitomizes who he is as a character.
And, as always, I leave you with my during-reading stream of consciousness:
- Well, the king just kind of sounds like an asshole.
- Aaagh, she feels obligated 😒. Sis, we don’t owe our parents anything.
- Yep, Gramps is an asshole.
- I freaking love Poppa Kase and Momma Malin.
- Ari calling Kase a “shadowy sod” has been the highlight of my year.
- The audacity!!!!
- He’s a 10, but he ruins the end of the book for you.
- Get you a man who builds you a library.
- King Eldirard can go choke on a dick.
- Twiddle Dumb and Twiddle Dee (Aarion and Gerard) can also choke.
- “We have a saying amongst our clans when someone has wronged us: you have been marked, Kings, and we never lose sight of our marks.” SCREAMING.
- “I hope you will find a place to hide when the alvers come.” I am FERAL.
- The moment Twiddle Dumb realized he F’ed up 👀🙃.
- I need a Tait Heartwalker and Mira story like I need air.
In conclusion, L.J.’s done it again; 10/10 recommend reading this when it comes out on June 30th.
